Origins of the Cotrim Family of Brasil

The origin of the Cotrim in Brazil points with respect to Portugal. The Cotrim of Portugal is, until today a great family and its history retraces there to century XIV (Martim Cotrim, Portuguese nobleman is cited in 1383). Before this it seems to be this originary family of England, having passed Portugal in century XV, in the people of two brothers, Jaime and Heitor Cotrim. They had been both nobles of the House of King D. Alfonso V, having the first one exerted the position of hunter-mor of the D.Henrique Infant, Duke of Viseu, and as been page of spear of that monarch.

Origem dos Cotrim no Brasil

A origem dos Cotrim no Brasil aponta para Portugal. Os Cotrim de Portugal são, até hoje uma grande família e sua história lá remonta ao século XIV (Martim Cotrim, nobre português é citado em 1383). Antes disso parece ser esta família originária da Inglaterra ,tendo passado a Portugal no século XV, nas pessoas de dois irmãos, Jaime e Heitor Cotrim. Foram ambos fidalgos da Casa do Rei D. Afonso V, tendo o primeiro exercido o cargo de monteiro-mor do Infante D.Henrique, Duque de Viseu, e o segundo sido pajem de lança daquele monarca.

Em Portugal, no município de Ferreira do Zêzere (freguesia de Dornes)está localizado (no Souto do Ereira) o mais antigo solar da família dos Cotrins (*). Ali morou o Fidalgo Lopo Martim Canas Cotrim, de quem descendem provavelmente 90% dos Cotrins que hoje existem em todo mundo, com especial incidência nos países de língua portuguesa.

(*)Esta antiga casa fidalga no lugar do Souto da Ereira é uma velha edificação do tipo rude dos solares quinhentistas do concelho, feita com xistos sobrepostos, cingidos por cunhais, vergas e ombreiras de pedra calcária. A escada é exterior. Há bastas dependências rurais, anexas, cobertas de telha vã. No interior grosseiras chaminés de aquecimento. Na fachada exterior, largo brasão ornamental, de mármore lavrado (Cotrins) embutido nos xistos do paramento. Toda a pedra de armas é delicadamente lavrada.

Dos Cotrins de Ferreira do Zêzere saíram alguns para o Brasil (por explo. Filipe de Matos Cotrim, Sargento-mór que subiu o Amazonas por volta de 1637).

A maioria dos Cotrim do Brasil são descendentes de duas linhas mapeadas.

A primeira (e que aparentemente mais se proliferou) vem da Bahia e refere-se a Cotrins vindos de Portugal no início do século XVIII que se instalaram no alto sertão baiano (Caetité, Guanambi, Rio das Contas, Caculé, etc.) e de lá se deslocaram principalmente para São Paulo (Pitangueiras, Batatais, Rio Preto, etc.).

A segunda, mais nobre, refere-se a Cotrins vindos (de Portugal) em outra época, e que se a princípio se instalaram no Rio de Janeiro (com grande incidência na região de Itatiaia) onde se uniram à família do Visconde de Itaborahy.

Existem outras linhas, ainda sem muitos dados. Destas, a mais evidente é a dos Gurjão (ou Grojão) Cotrim, um dos fundadores de Moji-Mirim, cidade do interior paulista.
